Sarah McCulloch — “Honey to a Bear”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Sarah McCulloch’s song “Honey to a Bear,” from her forthcoming album Sawmiller’s Daughter, which will be released on April 22. Sawmiller’s Daughter was produced by Jim Bickerstaff, mixed by Jim Bickerstaff and Mark Thompson at Waterview Studio in Southport, NC. It was engineered by Charles Holloman, Colin Lott, Mark Thompson, Jim Calabrese, and John Willis, with assistant engineer Jared Davis. The album was mastered by Taylor Chadwick at Georgetown Masters in Nashville. The music was recorded at East Avalon Recorders in Muscle Shoals, AL. Photography on the album is courtesy of Faith Morgan, and the album artwork is by Jeremy Fetzer.

“Honey to a Bear” is Terry Feller on drums; Bob Wray on bass; John Willis on acoustic, electric, and baritone guitars, and banjo; Donny Carpenter on fiddle; Stan Geberer on harmonica; and Savannah Bickerstaff and Landis Yarovyy on background vocals. Sarah McCulloch’s style comes through on this one — all sweetness and whimsy.

I was dating a guy and he said to me, ‘Your kisses are like honey to a bear.’ I told him I was going to write a song with that as a lyric. He said okay but I don’t think he really believed me. A couple days later I sent him the song and he was kind of like, ‘Okay, wow.’ I think I impressed myself a little bit, too. Other than those initial words spoken to me, the rest was pure imagination. It reminds me of all the country girls I have grown up around, including myself, who are soft and sweet on the inside but tough as hell on the outside. I giggle at the third verse where she shoves her and gloves her because she doesn’t share! Country girls are loyal as hell. And don’t mess around when it comes to their man… Hands off! It’s just an overall fun, whimsical little song that I hope makes other people giggle, too. — Sarah McCulloch
